Mat Hassan dealt with Mercs, not Myvi – KJ on Umno leader's wealth

RANTAU POLLS | There is nothing surprising about BN candidate Mohamad Hasan's wealth, as he was a former corporate figure, said Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin.
According to the former minister, attacks against Mohamad, also known as Mat Hasan, have intensified as the April 13 Rantau by-election approaches.
"When our rivals saw us gaining momentum, the attacks (against Mohamad) have become personal.
"They (Pakatan Harapan) used to talk about their promises (if they win the election), but now it is all personal," he told a ceramah in Taman Kelab Tuanku in Rantau yesterday.
Khairy then went on to laud Mohamad's corporate credentials.
"Outsiders may not know, but the locals know about Mat Hasan's background. He is not a professional politician. He was not in politics until he became the Negeri Sembilan menteri besar," he added.
He pointed out that Mohamad was called upon by former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in 2004 (to contest the Rantau state seat). Mat Hasan was then chief executive officer of South East Asia's Cycle and Carriage, which sold Mercedes Benz vehicles.
"Not Myvi, but Mercedez Benz. I'm not insulting Myvi, but I want to tell you how great Mat Hasan was," he said, adding that it was extremely rare for a European company to have a local CEO in a country they have invested in.
"Thus, it is not surprising that Mat Hasan is wealthy. Before this (politics) he worked as CEO in a multi-national company," he told the 300-strong crowd.
Mohamad's wealth came under scrutiny after it was revealed that he had transferred RM10 million to purchase an apartment in London, back in 2009.
The acting Umno president has denied any wrongdoing, and the BN-era Attorney-General's Chambers has cleared him of the charges.
Amanah Youth has since lodged a MACC report, urging for a fresh probe into the case.
Mohamad will face Harapan's Dr S Streram, as well as independent candidates Mohd Nor Yassin and R Malarvizhi on Saturday. -Mkini
