Good deal: Motorists queueing to pay their traffic summonses at makeshift counters at the George Town district police headquarters.
GEORGE TOWN: Afraid of being hauled to court for accumulating 16 outstanding traffic summonses in the past four years, salesman Tommy Lee rushed to the police station in Jalan Patani to settle them all for half the price.
Although the 42-year-old declined to reveal the amount he paid, he confessed to borrowing money from his boss to wipe the slate clean.
“Most of my offences were for speeding, double parking and using the phone while driving.
“I drive a van six days a week to deliver goods to customers.
Lee, who was recently slapped with a court order for one of his traffic offences, said settling the summonses during the half-price promotion period was definitely a better option.
“It will be troublesome and embarrassing to appear in court.
“Since my boss was willing to help me out, I don’t mind spending an hour to queue and pay the fines,” he said.
Thousands of people thronged the police station to settle their summonses during the two-day promotion which ends today.
The crowd made a beeline for the booths from as early as 7.30am yesterday.
Among them was college student Mohamad Hamidi Yusuff, 19.
“I have two summonses for illegal parking last year.
“Although they don’t cost much, my parents are not paying for them,” he said.
