KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Hannah Yeoh warned opposition MPs today against playing politics when welfare aid for the needy is in question.
She said those who voted against the ministry’s budget must explain their decision to their constituents.
“The budget includes aid for the needy, for children, for the handicapped and for the elderly that rely on it. We must give aid every month.
“These politicians must answer to the people that voted for them why they voted ‘do not agree’ on the welfare budget,” she said in a press conference at Parliament today.
She added that it had not been about insufficient quorum, as those against the budget had disagreed to it more than once.
“They disagreed twice,” she said. “If you want to play politics, play somewhere else. Don’t disturb the budget for those who need it every month.”
The 2020 budget for Yeoh’s ministry was almost rejected on Tuesday after opposition MPs claimed they outnumbered Pakatan Harapan (PH) MPs in the hall during voting.
The budget was passed with 32 MPs in favour of it and 28 against it after the last-minute entry of several more PH lawmakers. - FMT
