Amid logistics disruption, Azmin to head task force on food supply

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | International Trade and Industry Minister Azmin Ali will head a special task force to safeguard the nation's supply food chain during the two-week movement control order (MCO) period, said Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
During a press conference at Putrajaya this afternoon, he said Azmin (above) would head the special task force which also includes the Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, among others.
“A special task force chaired by the Senior Minister (Azmin) of Miti (International Trade and Industry Ministry) (is established) to ensure the supply of food is sufficient and not broken.
“Miti, the Agriculture Ministry and Domestic Trade (and Consumer Affairs Ministry), three ministries (in the special task force).
“The committee (special task force) will discuss not only the supply but from the start of the (food supply) chain,” Ismail (photo) said.
He said that the task force would ensure that not only that essentials like vegetables and fish are available but the entire logistics chain is functioning to ensure that food can be delivered without obstruction.
“The committee (task force) will ensure continuity and non-disruption (of food supply) from the fields (ladang) to consumers,” Ismail said.
Yesterday, it was reported that freight forwarders are crying foul over inconsistent enforcement by authorities that impede the industry's ability to ship and deliver goods.
Economic activities in the country have come to an almost standstill following the enforcement of the MCO beginning March 18.
Under the order, non-essential businesses and services have been ordered to shut while people are discouraged from leaving their homes except for pressing reasons.
The partial lockdown is expected to end on March 31 but could be extended.
As of noon yesterday, there were 1,518 confirmed Covid-19 cases with 14 deaths in the country. - Mkini
