CORONAVIRUS | Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) executive director Cynthia Gabriel has denied that she and her spouse had hidden the fact that they tested positive for Covid-19.
In a Facebook post today, Cynthia (photo) said she originally wanted to ignore the allegations but had no choice but to speak up when the allegation started making its rounds.
“This is clearly an intention to deceive. It’s mala fide.
“(It’s Raja Petra Kamarudin’s) usual style, and this time on my personal health issues. How much more deplorable can it get?
“For those who are concerned and genuinely want to know: I am well, I am asymptomatic, on home quarantine, and taking good care of myself.
“Of course, the haters out there won’t even let me be!”
She was responding to an article originally published by Free Malaysia Today this afternoon, but had been reproduced on Raja Petra’s website Malaysia Today with a new headline that named her.
The original Free Malaysia Today article did not name her nor her spouse.
The report quoted an unnamed NGO leader accusing Cynthia and her spouse of hiding the fact they had been warded for Covid-19, which could pose a risk to those around them.
It said the couple had only disclosed the matter in private group chats.
Deputy Health Minister I Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali reportedly told the online portal that those hiding their exposure to Covid-19 are not helping to curb the spread of the disease, and they must come clean.
“Many would be infected if those tested positive did not isolate themselves,” he said.
However, Cynthia explained that her spouse - Suhakam commissioner Jerald Joseph - had already informed his friends and family upon finding out that he had been infected.
Cynthia said she had done the same when her test results were released and she was admitted to a hospital.
“The Health Ministry had duly issued quarantine letters to the relevant people I was in contact with and whom they figured they thought necessary.
“And of course, Raja Petra would conveniently leave out the messages that I also informed the same persons that my next two swabs were negative. So, I was cleared by the ministry,” she said.
Health Ministry guidelines require people who test positive for Covid-19 to be admitted to hospital regardless of whether they show symptoms or not.
Health Ministry officials would then track down and test the patient’s close contacts. They would be instructed to undergo a 14-day home quarantine and will be checked regularly by health officials.
People under home quarantine will be warded if they show symptoms of Covid-19, test positive for the disease, or if their home environment is unsuited for quarantine. - Mkini
