Gerakan questions Penang gov't over lack of updates on state's Covid-19 case

Malaysiakini

Gerakan has criticised the state government's slow-motion approach to the "arrival" of Covid-19 to the shores of Penang.
The party's deputy president, Oh Tong Keong expressed regret that Penang authorities have yet to explain the situation surrounding the case involving the victim, an engineer at Motorola Solutions, which is located at Bayan Lepas.
"The people need more information to protect themselves," he said in a statement.
Ong urged the state's Health Department to publish daily updates to ease the people's concern over the matter.
He was responding to a news report that Penang has recorded one Covid-19 case, an employee of American data communications and telecommunications equipment provider Motorola Solutions who tested positive for the virus.
According to The News Straits Times, the employee had returned to work in the state with flu-like symptoms, after visiting Kuala Lumpur over a week ago.
The report said Motorola Solutions communications (Asia Pacific and International Commercial Markets) director Damien Batey confirmed the news.
Batey had said the company was working closely with the Health Ministry and following their guidelines to minimise the risk of further exposure.
“All our staff in Penang will work from home for the next two weeks and all necessary actions are being taken for them to return after that time. Additionally, all of our facilities are being sanitised,” he added.
Oh said newly appointed Health executive councillor Norlela Ariffin should act swiftly and contact the company to offer assistance on how to resolve the situation.
"Please form a special committee to prevent Covid-19 from spreading and not rely solely on the Health Ministry," Oh said.
"We recommend Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow to ensure during public events, disinfectants and masks are provided for all guests, civil servants and reporters.
"They are more likely to come in contact with victims, the state should set a good example by wearing masks," he stressed.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced 12 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of cases in Malaysia to 129.
While all 12 new cases are tied to a cluster of infection from Patient 33, there are no details on how they contracted the disease.
The PMO also announced that 25 patients in the country have recovered and discharged. - Mkini
