New finance minister to focus on challenges, not politics

Malaysiakini

Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said his focus as the next finance minister is on the economic challenges ahead.
Speaking to reporters after his swearing-in as a senator, Zafrul stressed that he was not a politician, to which he was asked if he can keep politics out of the finance ministry.
"I hope so. I think what we need now is to focus on the challenges ahead and I'm sure you know what the challenges are in terms of the economy," he said.
Zafrul said he was humbled and surprised by the appointment.
"As you know, I'm not a politician. I'll do my best to help the country," he said.
Zafrul said he would be sworn in as a cabinet minister and receive a briefing from ministry officials this afternoon.
Asked if Malaysia needs to recalibrate Budget 2020, Zafrul said he needed time before deciding.
"Please allow me to start work today first," he said.
Zafrul, 46, left an incredibly lucrative job as chief executive officer of CIMB Group Holdings Bhd to become the finance minister of Muhyiddin Yassin's cabinet.
His appointment comes at a time when Malaysia is grappling with poor exchange rates, falling interest rates, slower economic growth due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the China-US trade war and plunging oil prices. - Mkini
