KUALA LUMPUR: Two helicopters, believed to be privately-owned, crashed near Sekolah Kebangsaan Tamil Taman Melawati in Taman Melawati, near here, this morning, killing two passengers.

The two helicopters, each with two occupants comprising three men and one woman, grazed each other in the 11.45am incident, before plunging to earth.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department chief Norazam Khamis said they received a distress call at 11.47am, before deploying three rescue teams to the scene.

All four helicopter occupants sustained visible injuries and were still strapped to their seats in the wreckage as nearby residents went to their aid.

"Two of the occupants, including the woman, sustained light injuries and are conscious.

"The other two were rushed to hospital by an ambulance," said Norazam.

St John's ambulance medical personnel confirmed that two of the victims had died.

A spokesman from the Taman Melawati police station confirmed the case, saying that details of the crash are still sketchy.

Ampang Jaya district deputy police chief Superintendent Mohd Azam Ismail confirmed that the helicopter took off from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang and was headed to Genting Sempah.

He said the deceased have been identified as My Heli Club's captain and chief flying instructor, Commander (Rtd) Mohamed Sabri Baharom, and Mohamad Ifwan Rawi.

The two injured victims are former Malaysia Airlines chief executive officer and managing director, Tan Sri Ahmad Jauhari Yahaya, and the sole woman, Tan Chai Yan.

The two helicopters are believed to be French-made Guimbal Cabri G2 Rouge and Bleu choppers owned by the My Heli Club.
