Appeal for blood goes out for three Sabah hospitals

The Sabah branch of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (BSMM Sabah) has put out an appeal for blood, saying supply is at a critical level at three hospitals in the state.

Covid-19 Pandemic Blood Programme coordinator Leslie Chan named the hospitals as Queen Elizabeth I in Kota Kinabalu, the Kudat Hospital and the Tuaran Hospital.

The BSMM Blood Programme deputy chairperson said a blood donation programme will be carried out at the BSMM Sabah building every Friday to Sunday this month from 9am to 4pm.

“Donors are fearful of donating blood due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Sabah Blood Bank Unit has had to get blood supply from Kuala Lumpur Hospital and Sarawak General Hospital,” he said in a statement.

The Sabah Blood Bank Unit secured 600 pints of blood in March and 850 pints in September from two hospitals, he said, adding that hospitals in Sabah need at least 300 pints of blood daily.
