Dewan Rakyat sittings to end at 1pm this week

PARLIAMENT | The rest of this week's parliament sittings will be cut short to 1pm following Covid-19 fears that also prompted an early end to yesterday's session.

The motion was passed after a voice vote called by Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun this morning.

De facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan said the decision to end the sittings at 1pm was in accordance with Standing Order 12(1).

Azhar also clarified that a senator's aide had tested positive for Covid-19, but both of them were not in parliament since receiving the results.

"They didn't come to parliament every day or roam around in parliament," he said in response to Mahfuz Omar (Harapan-Pokok Sena).

Mahfuz had urged Azhar to clarify a statement made by Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah yesterday that seven individuals, including four auxiliary police who reportedly worked in parliament, tested positive for Covid-19.

Others who raised the issue include Maszlee Malik (Ind-Simpang Renggam) and Xavier Jeyakumar (Harapan-Kuala Langat), but Azhar called for calm, pointing out that all the MPs present have been tested negative prior to the sitting.

Noor Hisham yesterday said the seven individuals were found to be Covid-19 positive from a screening done before the parliamentary sitting on Monday.

As the current parliament would be in session for six weeks, Noor Hisham said the Health Ministry would consider conducting Covid-19 testings every two weeks to detect any carriers of the virus. - Mkini
