Don’t evade question on direct nego under PN - MP tells Zafrul

Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz has been urged to disclose the number of projects awarded through direct tender under the Perikatan Nasional administration.

In a statement today, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong (above) chastised Zafrul for sidestepping the question in a written parliamentary reply.

The DAP lawmaker previously asked for a full list of direct tender projects awarded under BN (2013-2018) and Perikatan Nasional (February 2020 till now). He also requested for the total number of projects awarded in such a manner.

Instead of providing information on the projects, the minister replied on Nov 4 by listing the criteria under which the government allows projects to be awarded via direct tender.

“It is clear that the minister did not answer the question...

“I will send a follow-up letter to the Dewan Rakyat speaker (Azhar Azizan Harun) to request the Finance Ministry to give me another answer. In my opinion, this is against Standing Orders because the question was not answered,” Khoo said.

A check by Malaysiakini found Khoo’s question (Question number 39) missing from the list of Nov 4 written parliamentary replies uploaded on the Parliament website.

A photograph of the printed copy of the reply was included with his press statement.

Khoo further questioned why Tengku Zafrul was reluctant to disclose the information when he previously revealed details of directly negotiated projects approved by the previous Pakatan Harapan (2018-2020) government.

During the previous House sitting, the minister stated that 101 projects worth RM6.61 billion were approved by his Harapan predecessor Lim Guan Eng.

He later released a full list of the projects in question.

The move led to allegations that Harapan had practised double standards by touting integrity and open tenders but maintaining direct tender procedures.

DAP secretary-general Lim later clarified that about 95 percent of the 101 projects were BN-era projects. - Mkini
