EMCO lifted for some prisons, but visitations still not allowed

COVID-19 | The Prisons Department will not allow visitations in several prisons and detention centres that are no longer subjected to the enhanced movement control order (MCO).

These prisons are Tapah Prison, Taiping Prison, Kamunting Correctional Centre, Sungai Buloh Remand Prison, Kajang Prison, Kajang Women's Prison, Puncak Alam Correctional Centre, Sungai Petani Prison and Perlis Correctional Centre.

A decision to not continue the enhanced MCO in these areas was made by the National Security Council (NSC) yesterday.

In a statement today, the Prisons Department said the standard operating procedures for the transfer and management of prisoners would be improved from time to time.

Several Covid-19 clusters in prisons had emerged following a major outbreak at the Alor Setar Prison in late September.

Other prisons which are still under enhanced MCO procedures include the Penang Remand Prison and several facilities in Sabah.

The Prisons Department did not state the number of detainees or department staff who have been infected by Covid-19 and died.

However, it stated that 63,730 tests had been conducted on detainees, staff and their family members between Sept 1 and yesterday. - Mkini
