Help the people, not assemblypersons - student group tells Kelantan govt

The Kelantan state government's plan to raise the allowances of assemblypersons and exco members is unreasonable, a student group says.

The Kelantan chapter of the National Association of Muslim Students Malaysia (PKPIM) said they should instead be helping the people.

"Kelantan PKPIM believes the need to raise the wages (sic) of assemblypersons (on the grounds of) closing the wage gap with lawmakers from other states is unreasonable.

"The state government should prioritise a budget that solves the people's problems especially the B40 who were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Extra incentives should also be given to frontliners who are always dedicated to protecting the people," the group's Kelantan chairperson Muhammad Aqil Iqbal Mohd Zulkiffli said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Mohd Amar Abdullah (above) said assemblypersons will enjoy an allowance increment of between RM3,000 and RM5,000 in an effort to reduce the pay discrepancy with lawmakers from other states.

He also said the increment would go back to the people, saying that state lawmakers were akin to "welfare officers" as many in the community need their attention and assistance.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Aqil also urged the Kelantan state government to help students with education costs, as well as help create more jobs to mitigate unemployment.

"May Kelantan continue to be blessed and distanced from irresponsible leaders," he added. - Mkini
