Ideally, PM wants 'close-to-MCO' restrictions

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said he has instructed the National Security Council (NSC) to review rules for sports and social activities.

He said this was necessary in view of the increase in Covid-19 cases in Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, Perak, and Johor.

"Yes, our previous actions had helped somewhat in controlling the spread of Covid-19 but the situation now requires mitigation and intervention that works faster and more effectively.

"I have instructed the NSC to review the SOP for social and sports activities to make it more stringent to stop the spread of Covid-19.

If possible, the rules should be almost similar to movement control order (MCO) SOP," he said in a post on Facebook.

Between March 18 and May 4, all sporting and social activities were banned under the MCO. Those rules were gradually lifted under the conditional MCO and recovery MCO phases.

Selangor, Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, and Sabah are currently under conditional MCO which prevents travel across state and district borders. There are much fewer restrictions in all other regions which are under the recovery MCO.

Earlier today, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob told the press that after an NSC meeting tomorrow, new regulations will likely be added for conditional MCO areas.

"The NSC will table their plans. Perhaps (some rules) can be tightened without having to close (more businesses). - Mkini
