PARLIAMENT | DAP's Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng earned a five-day suspension from the Dewan Rakyat today after he called a ruling made by Deputy Speaker Azalina Othman Said "stupid".
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun initially imposed a two-day suspension but Lim's refusal to leave the hall earned him an additional three-day ban.
An outcry started when Lim Guan Eng (DAP-Bagan) requested Azhar to revisit a ruling made by Azalina. Yesterday, Azalina's ruling was for PDP's Bintulu MP Tiong King Sing to either apologise or clarify his allegedly offensive remarks against Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
Aside from Guan Eng, Sim Tze Tzin (DAP-Bayan Baru) had also requested Azhar to make a new ruling and instruct Health Minister Dr Adham Baba to order Tiong to apologise to Noor Hisham.
"I have read the Hansard. I am of the view that the debate was crude but I went through the Hansard in detail and a ruling has been made and it is final. So I don't have the powers to revisit it," said Azhar.
Lip Eng interjected and said, "But the ruling is stupid!".
"You are too much... Keep quiet!" said Azhar as Lip Eng interrupted his attempt to deliver a ruling.
Azhar also threatened to call the police on Lip Eng after his refusal to retract the slur against Azalina and to leave the hall as instructed.
A visibly irate Azhar continued to admonish Lip Eng as several opposition MPs attempted to defend him, stating that there was no need for a threat to call the police.
"He did not want to leave. What do you want me to do? He was lucky he did not get 10 days (suspension)," said Azhar.
The day's proceedings resumed with debates of the Supply Bill 2021 by Langkawi MP Dr Mahathir Mohamad. - Mkini
