Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) president Ong Seng Khek has gone on leave pending a criminal trial related to the recent water pollution episode in Rawang, Selangor.
In a statement, KLSCAH said its board held an emergency meeting today to consider and eventually accept Ong's leave application.
"KLSCAH respects the principle of innocent until proven guilty which is the basis of this country's legal system. We agree with our chairperson's quest to prove his innocence," he said.
For the time being, KLSCAH vice-president Ser Choon Ing will be the association’s acting president.
Ong (above) was among four company directors of Syarikat United Fineoleo Sdn Bhd who was charged yesterday under Section 25 (1) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 with releasing effluents from a palm oil processing plant into Sungai Kundang in Rawang, without a permit.
If found guilty, the four can be fined up to RM100,000, jailed up to four years or both.
The four were also charged over the presence of eight undocumented migrants on their company premises on Oct 26. - Mkini
