GEORGE TOWN: Police today detained a man who had tried to rob a homeless man on a wheelchair over the weekend, leaving the man, a senior citizen, with bruises on the face.
In the 9.30am incident on Saturday, the 66-year-old senior citizen who was chatting with a friend on the pavement on China Street here was approached by the assailant who then struck up a conversation with him.
Moments later, the man grabbed the old man’s sling bag containing his valuables. A brief struggle ensued in which the young man punched the older man’s face.
When the senior refused to let go of his bag, the assailant gave up and left with an accomplice who was waiting on a motorcycle nearby. The whole incident was caught on camera.
Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong said a 32-year-old man was later caught at Stewart Lane not far away. He said the man had nine previous convictions.
He said the suspect was admitted to the Penang Hospital as he suffered from tuberculosis and internal bleeding in the stomach. He said police were in the midst of tracking down his accomplice.
The case will be investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt while committing robbery, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and/or whipping. - FMT
