The Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (Margma) wants members to upscale its preventive ordinance to ensure a safe and healthy environment at the workplace in light of the third wave of Covid-19.
Its president Supramaniam Shanmugam said strict adherence to the standard operating procedure (SOP) imposed by the Health Ministry must be further enhanced by constant monitoring and checks by the health and security staffs on every stratum of workers in factories and dormitories.
“The joint task force consisting of the relevant ministries and Margma will continue with the surprise visits to our members’ factories, to monitor and ensure that they are in compliance with the living conditions standards as stipulated by the Human Resources Ministry,” he said.
Supramaniam said Margma has adopted a resolution via an extraordinary general meeting, for all its members to embark and attain the social compliance requirements as per the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange/Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit programme.
“Many have achieved it, yet others are at various stages of completion while this audit will address amongst others, the living conditions standards.
“Margma is aware of the situation in regard to one of our top members’ facilities and we are assured that they are working very closely with the health authorities and sanitary experts to contain and suppress the virus attack on their workers,” he added.
He said the affected company will provide every assistance to the healthcare authorities and is taking good care of the affected workers as well.
“Margma wishes to allay the concern of the global Health Ministry and World Health Organisation on whether enough gloves will be produced for them in the fight to suppress the Covid-19 pandemic across all nations of the world.
“Be assured that new capacity is available to make good the interim shortfall and that there is not going to be any aggravated disruption to whatever is currently being supplied globally,” he said.
Margma estimates the global demand to touch 360 billion pieces this year and said Malaysia will do its best to supply at least 250 to 270 billion pieces.
