Medan 88 EMCO: Cops found 13 of 400 'missing' residents

Police have ordered 13 of 400 individuals believed to have fled their homes at Medan 88, Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi, Sepang, to return to the enhanced movement control order (MCO) area last night and undergo Covid-19 screening.

Harian Metro quoted Sepang District police chief Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof as saying that the nine migrants and four locals were located based on information from their family members and housemates.

He said five Indonesians and one Myanmarese are the staff of a local hardware store while the three other migrants are from Thailand. Meanwhile, the four Malaysians are identified as being Sabahans.

"Police will increase efforts to locate the missing residents, aside from counting on public assistance," Wan Kamarul Azran reportedly told the Malay-daily.

Harian Metro also quoted several residents who expressed concern that the situation would contribute to new Covid-19 clusters in the area.

It was reported yesterday that the Sepang District Disaster Management Committee would seek police assistance to detect the 400 residents who did not return home after receiving information of the enhanced MCO.

Its chairperson Mohd Zain A Hamid reportedly said 43 positive Covid-19 cases were detected in the area until last Monday, the infected believed to be returnees from Sabah.

On Wednesday, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the enhanced MCO for Medan 88 would be enforced for two weeks until Nov 25, involving 88 units of shop lots, 284 premises and 800 residents.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that the residents did not run away but instead they were frightened upon knowing that their housing area has been placed under the enhanced MCO, which came into force last Wednesday.

Wan Kamarul Azran said many of the residents in the area were at their workplace when the announcement on the enforcement of the enhanced MCO was made, leaving them unaware of what was happening.

He said when they returned home from work and saw army personnel were installing barbed wire coupled with the presence of policemen at their residence, they were afraid to enter the area.

“No individual from the area has run away, like what has been reported by the media previously.

“There are between 700 and 800 residents living in the area and about 400 of them have yet to be screened for Covid-19,” Wan Kamarul Azran told Bernama today.

He said efforts to track down others who have yet to return home are being carried out with the cooperation of residents in the area.

Meanwhile, Selangor police chief Noor Azam Jamaludin said they would obtain information on the location of workers from Medan 88, who allegedly did not return to their respective homes, from their employers.

Noor Azam said the police would also seek cooperation from their colleagues in order to locate their whereabouts.

“Police are also in the midst of identifying the actual number of individuals who are said to have run away after receiving information that the area was installed with barbed wire due to the implementation of the enhanced MCO.

"The 400 figures are only a rough estimate,” he told Bernama. - Mkini
