Rubber glove manufacturer Top Glove's housing for their workers is in terrible condition, Human Resources Minister M Saravanan said.
He vowed that stern action would be taken and that "everything" would be completed within one week.
“I have visited the hostels and the conditions are terrible. My officers were ordered to go in full force as this is a big, vulnerable migrant workers colony.
"If we don’t act, this cluster might get out of control.
“The Labour Department will ensure that employers are held responsible for workers' housing conditions and dire action will be taken according to the law, ” Saravanan was quoted as saying by The Star.
The English daily reported that the minister shared photos and videos of the hostels, which appeared crowded and unsanitary. He had visited the accommodations a few days ago together with officials from the Labour Department.
The company's hostels and factories in Meru, Selangor, are the epicentre of the Teratai cluster of Covid-19 infections that registered 1,511 new cases yesterday.
The cluster has 4,036 positive cases to date.
Saravanan had previously visited the Top Glove hostels in August
In July, he had said that Top Glove's workers' accommodation had shortcomings that could be addressed.
This after the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) placed sanctions on exports by Top Glove, citing housing conditions as one area of concern.
Top Glove had vowed to address these housing concerns.
In the wake of the Teratai cluster outbreak, the company has agreed to shut down 16 of its factories temporarily and commit to containing the virus. - Mkini
