PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin rejected the proposal that Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi be given the deputy premier post, says Tan Sri Annuar Musa (pic).
The former Umno secretary-general said that the Prime Minister had made it clear that he would not appoint Ahmad Zahid or other politicians with ongoing court cases into his Cabinet.
In an interview with Umno information chief Sharil Hamdan which was streamed on Facebook, Annuar said that Muhyiddin had made this known in a closed-door meeting with Umno leaders.
“I was asked for my view, and that if our president cannot become the deputy prime minister, it is better not to have the position, and later the concept of the four Senior Ministers emerged, ” he said on Thursday (Nov 20).
Annuar questioned the intentions of Umno members who were urging for someone from the party to be appointed as deputy prime minister.
He asked if members truly wanted to have their party represented in a top leadership post, or if they had wanted to rally support for a certain leader.
“If our political bureau does decide to ask for a Cabinet reshuffle and ask for the deputy prime minister post - for me, that is not wrong.
"But we must ask: Is the motive for seeking the post for a certain individual, or do we want the prime minister to have a deputy prime minister that is representing Umno?
“Does that mean that when we ask for the deputy prime minister's post, we are asking the prime minister to go against his word and appoint our president although he has court cases?” he said.
He added that Ahmad Zahid has stated that he wants to clear his name in court and is not seeking special treatment to have his cases closed. - Star
