Mustapa pledges to make sure development projects are done

Economic Affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed says project implementation will be discussed at a meeting of officials soon.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will strive to ensure that the development projects in 2020 are fully completed, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economic Affairs) Mustapa Mohamed today.

He said he and the chief secretary to the government would chair a meeting of officials soon to discuss project implementation plans. The meeting would involve several ministries, including the finance ministry, works ministry and the Implementation Coordination Unit under the Prime Minister’s Department.

The meeting will also discuss the implementation and monitoring of 2021 development projects.

He said the government had allocated RM4 billion under the economic stimulus package for projects implemented by G1 and G2 contractors, while RM2.5 billion was allocated in the 2021 budget for small- and medium-scale projects.

“Around 54,000 G1 contractors and 24,000 G2 contractors are expected to benefit,” he said in a statement today.

In a related development, the minister said Malaysia’s gross domestic product had contracted by 2.7% in the third quarter of 2020, but noted that the decline was better than the Bloomberg projection of minus 4%.

“This clearly shows that the nation is on the right track for recovery,” he said, adding that 80.6% of the RM64.96 billion allocated for development expenditure in 2020 had been utilised up to Nov 8. - FMT
