PARLIAMENT l Higher Education Minister Noraini Ahmad brushed off the allegation that there was a large cut in the allocation for Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Budget 2021, saying that there was only an RM4 million reduction.
Noraini (BN-Parit Sulong) also explained that the total allocation the university will receive for 2021 is divided into two categories, namely UiTM management and UiTM hospital, compared to 2020, when the two allocations were consolidated.
"For your information, the management allocation received by UiTM in 2020 of RM1.86 billion includes the allocation for UiTM hospital," she said during the closing session of the debate for Budget 2021 in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Earlier, Rusnah Aluai (Pakatan Harapan-Tangga Batu) had interrupted her to question the reason for cutting the allocation for UiTM in Budget 2021.
“It seems that various assistance to higher learning institutions has been stated, but as a former UiTM lecturer, I would like to ask why there is a budget cut that has reached RM130 million?
"Why is it that the Perikatan Nasional government, comprising of the Malay-Muslims, has the heart to cut allocations to the Malay-Muslim university?" Rusnah asked.
Noraini denied this, explaining that overall, the allocation for UiTM in 2020, excluding its hospital, was RM1.737 billion.
Meanwhile, the allocation for 2021 is RM1.733 billion, therefore this represents a reduction of only RM4 million.
“I would also like to inform that this RM4 million reduction will be covered through internal savings that will be implemented this year," she said, adding that the ministry views the welfare of UiTM as a priority.
"I want to guarantee that 100 percent of the salaries of the academic staff and contract staff will be funded by the government," Noraini added. - Mkini
