PAS rep hopes other states will emulate KL liquor restrictions

Terengganu state lawmaker Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi hopes that other states and local councils will emulate Kuala Lumpur's upcoming liquor restrictions.

The PAS representative believes this is not to prevent non-Muslims from drinking alcohol, but rather to regulate the sale of liquor.

"I feel that this move should be lauded and hope that it would be emulated by other states and local councils.

"This effort is in line with the government's policy to create a healthy lifestyle, and a civilised and responsible society," he said in a statement published by Harakah yesterday.

Khalil (above) added that non-Muslims could still purchase liquor at licensed premises.

The guidelines issued by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) on Monday, state that sundry shops, convenience stores, and Chinese medicine halls will no longer be allowed to sell hard liquor from Oct 1 next year.

However, liquor shops, retail outlets, pubs, bars, lounges, supermarkets, hypermarkets, and wholesalers are unaffected by the guidelines.

Businesses that will be affected have complained that the new restrictions will have a negative impact on the economy, reducing tax revenue for the government.

Critics have also said this could encourage the sale and purchase of smuggled liquor. - Mkini
