PUTRAJAYA: Those preparing for Deepavali celebration are advised to refrain from panic buying as this could accelerate Covid-19 transmission in the community.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said panic buying was also unnecessary since all economic activities will continue as usual during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) period.

"If shops get overcrowded due to panic buying, physical distancing cannot be observed and the panic buyers themselves are exposed to the risk of contracting the virus," he said during a press conference here today.

Dr Noor Hisham also advised the public to limit their social movement to flatten the Covid-19 curve within a shorter period.

"We expect the curve to flatten by four weeks, but if we are able to achieve that within two weeks, we may end the CMCO and return to RMCO faster.

"So, please try to postpone social gatherings and weddings at the moment. Stay at home as much as possible and if you must go out, then please wear a face mask and practice physical distancing," he said. - NST
