RM180 telco credit for B40 and RM50 e-wallet credit for youths

BUDGET 2021 | The government will provide telco data and airtime to the B40 community at a time when there is an increased reliance on Internet services during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, when tabling Budget 2021 in the Dewan Rakyat today, said some eight million people from the B40 community will be given RM180 credit to purchase telecommunication services.

He said this involved an allocation of RM1.5 billion.

At the same time, he said telecommunications companies would also provide RM1.5 billion worth of free data.

Tengku Zafrul also announced that the government, through its e-Belia programme, will provide a one-off RM50 e-wallet credit to youths aged 18 to 20.

He said this would cost RM75 million for 1.5 million youths.

Noting that online learning was becoming the norm during the Covid-19 pandemic, Zafrul said government-linked companies and government-linked investment companies would contribute RM150 million to Tabung Cerdik.

He said this fund would be used to purchase laptops for 150,000 students in 500 schools as a pilot project to be managed by Yayasan Hasanah, a foundation of Khazanah Nasional.

Concurrently, he said students who are borrowing from the Higher Education Loan Fund (PTPTN) will be offered loans to purchase laptops to aid in their online learning.

He said RM100 million in loans would be provided in cooperation with Bank Simpanan Nasional. - Mkini
