KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Zakat Centre, which comes under the Sabah Islamic Religious Council, has contributed RM1.4 million to the health ministry to help curb the spread of Covid-19, particularly in the state.
Sabah special functions minister Mohd Ariffin Arif said the contribution was aimed at helping meet the urgent needs of clinics and hospitals in the state.
He said it was one of the six programmes implemented by the centre to help the people affected by the pandemic, apart from handing over a one-off assistance to 9,600 monthly zakat (tithe) recipients involving an allocation of RM960,000.
Assistance was also provided to 100 mosques with a contribution of RM3,000 per mosque to help their congregations, he said after receiving a zakat contribution of more than RM500,000 from DBKK Holdings Sdn Bhd.
Mohd Ariffin said more organisations, especially government-linked and commercial companies, should come forward to fulfil their zakat responsibilities.
There were 370 new cases of Covid-19 reported in Sabah today. - FMT
