Six more called for questioning over article on king's role

Six more members of the UM Association of New Youth (Umany) have been summoned for questioning over to an article on the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's role, which is being investigated under the Sedition Act.

According to Umany president Robin Yap, the six are central committee members. Some had come from Johor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca.

The six entered the Kajang district police headquarters at about 12.30pm, accompanied by their lawyers.

They then left the police station at around 2pm.

One of their lawyers, Wang Guan Hui, told the media they are being called as witnesses to facilitate the police investigation on the case.

He said the students gave their statement for about one and half hours, but it is unknown whether they will be charged.

According to Wang, the police also revealed that 70 reports have been lodged regarding the case.

Prior to that, the students brandished placards, which read “Freedom of speech” and “Don't silence us” outside the police headquarters.

PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan, DAP Youth secretary Eric Teh Hoong Keat, former Umany president Wong Yan Ke were present today to show their support to the students.

Last Thursday, police recorded Yap and the association's vice-president Tan Li Yuan's statements.

Apart from the Sedition Act, the pair is also being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

The investigation followed more than 40 police reports lodged against the article, which called on the monarch not to interfere in national affairs and "to always maintain a neutral attitude and play his role within the framework permitted by the federal constitution".

The statement was in response to the Agong's rejection of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's proposal for a proclamation of emergency and His Majesty's advise to all parliamentarians to support the government's Budget 2021 Bill.

Meanwhile, University Malaya is also conducting an investigation into the case. - Mkini
