Teratai cluster involves Top Glove factory workers

COVID-19 | The Teratai cluster, which has recorded 76 Covid-19 cases to date, involves Top Glove factory workers in Klang, according to Selangor government sources.

It is still unclear if the workers were all attached to one factory or more, as Top Glove has more than 20 facilities in the Meru area in Klang.

Information received so far revealed that most of the workers found positive were those who live at the workers' hostels along Jalan Teratai in Meru.

Cases at the factory first came to light after Top Glove on Nov 5 confirmed that 17 employees have tested positive for Covid-19.

"The affected employees, who were asymptomatic, were immediately isolated and have since been admitted to hospital for treatment after their results came back positive.

"Additionally, the company is embarking on deep cleaning and thorough sanitisation of the affected factory, living quarters, and company vehicles in accordance with the guidelines by the Health Ministry," it said in a statement.

The positive results came following a screening exercise conducted on a group of the company's employees on Nov 2.

According to the sources, many of the individuals tested positive under Teratai Cluster are foreign workers who live in a residential area along Jalan Teratai.

"The company had bought houses in the area which it turned into workers' hostels. But there are also other residents who live in the area," said one source.

Attempts have been made to reach Top Glove top management for their comments on the case.

Malaysiakini understands that the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has also facilitated the sanitisation process of the area.

When contacted, Ngian Yoke Mooi, the MPK councillor in charge of Bandar Baru Klang Zone, said a team from the municipal council was dispatched to carry out disinfection activities in the area this morning.

"The disinfection activities were done at public areas in Jalan Abadi 1 and Jalan Abadi 10, as well as grocery stores, playground and the vicinity," she added.

The Health Ministry yesterday announced that they have found another infection group, involving an index case who was tested positive in a screening exercise carried out on Nov 2.

It assigned the group of infections as "Teratai cluster".

The Health Ministry today reported two additional cases, bringing the total to 76.

The cases are not confined to the factory quarters.

According to the Health Ministry, in addition to Klang, the cluster also involves the districts of Kuala Selangor, Petaling and Hulu Langat. - Mkini
