Top Glove, the world's largest manufacturer of disposable rubber gloves, said its operations are not affected by a Covid-19 outbreak among its factory workers.
In a statement to Malaysiakini, the company stressed that they had the situation under control and were working with the health authorities.
"Top Glove reiterates that our containment of the recent Covid-19 cases concerning our employees is very much under control.
"Top Glove and Top Glove Global Doctors are working very closely with the Health Ministry and we continue to adhere to stringent precautionary measures in tandem with the guidelines from the Health Ministry.
"Top Glove’s operations, too, remain unaffected," it said.
The statement was in reply to Malaysiakini's request for Top Glove's comments on the recent outbreak, including measures being taken to curb the spread of the virus and whether its factories would be shut down temporarily due to the issue.
For the record, Top Glove has a total workforce of 21,000 employees. It operates over 30 factories in Malaysia including 26 in Selangor, most of which are located in the Klang district.
On Nov 5, the company had issued a media release stating that 17 of its employees were tested positive for the virus during a screening carried out on Nov 2.
Two days later, the Health Ministry announced that they had detected a new infection cluster identified as the Teratai cluster with a total of 74 positive cases with the index case traced through a screening of symptomatic individuals on Nov 2.
On Nov 8, Malaysiakini reported Selangor state government sources as saying the cluster involved Top Glove factory workers, many of whom stayed at a workers' hostel in Jalan Teratai, Meru, Klang.
According to the Health Ministry, as of noon yesterday, the cluster recorded a total of 96 positive cases. However, it is unclear if all the cases in this cluster involve Top Glove workers. - Mkini
