TV3 has apologised for describing United States vice-president-elect Kamala Devi Harris as "anak pendatang tanpa izin dari India" (child of an illegal immigrant from India) in its Buletin 1.30.
Taking to Twitter, TV3 issued a correction and apologised for the error.
The Buletin TV3 segment featured Harris' speech in Delaware following her election, where the newscaster said: “Kamala, 56, has made history in the US with her election as the first woman vice-president.
“She also made history for being the first black woman and of Asian descent to hold the second most important post in America.
“The child of a Jamaican and an illegal immigrant from India 'broke stigma' when she became the first woman attorney-general of California...”
Earlier today, MIC senator S Vell Paari called out TV3's mistake in a series of tweets.
He pointed out that Harris' late mother Shyamala Gopalan was a biomedical scientist who had settled in the US.
“Dear BuletinTV3. Get your facts right. Kamala Harris is not 'anak pendatang asing tanpa izin dari India'. Her late mum was born in Chennai, India and moved to the US at the age of 19 to study at the University of California before she met and married (Harris') dad.
“Dear BuletinTV3. Not only is Kamala Harris the first woman VP but also (the) first woman of colour elected to the second-highest position of the most powerful nation in the world. And you guys insult her mum at the moment of her greatest achievement.
“Dear BuletinTV3. Her mum is a scientist who worked on advances in oncology. Check Wikipedia," he said.
"I can't understand the love some of you guys have with this word pendatang. I hope it was a mistake and not deliberate,” he added.
