A 62-year-old broker arrested by MACC yesterday in connection with the procurement of six littoral combat ships (LCS) is suspected to have engineered ghost projects to siphon a total of RM24 million.
According to sources with knowledge of the case, the man allegedly worked in cahoots with a former CEO of a company that was involved in the procurement of the ships.
"Basically, this company had many sub-contractors working under it in the LCS project.
"Investigators believe that the suspect (the broker) was tasked to engage three companies to act as sub-contractors doing works that actually didn't exist, and false claims were submitted to the first company.
"This was how the total amount came to RM24 million. Claims were made, but there was no actual work done," a source told Malaysiakini.
The source indicated that this was where the former CEO, who was also arrested by MACC earlier this week, played his role.
With his access level, the former chief executive allegedly authorised all payments for the alleged false claims.
Earlier today, it was reported that MACC had arrested a broker for allegedly submitting false documents in connection with the procurement of the six LCS.
According to Bernama, the MACC also detained two chief executive officers on Monday (Jan 24) after finding new leads in its investigation into the procurement of the LCS by Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd. - Mkini
