The police called up Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang over claims he breached Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) at the launch of his self-titled book on Jan 11.
This follows a viral photo at the event depicting Lim, Muar MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, and book author Kee Thuan Chye without face masks.
Lim (above, left) claimed he had not broken the SOPs, alleging that the masks were only taken off at the request of a photographer who wanted to take a picture of the trio.
“There was a picture (of them without masks) that was a result of the cameraman asking for it, and we complied.
“After that, we put our masks back on,” he said outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters today.
Lim gave his statement at around 3pm today and was accompanied by his political secretary and lawyer Syahredzan Johan.
Syahredzan (above, right)said they were not informed which section Lim was being investigated under but was told a police report was made over the viral photo.
Lim and his lawyer maintained that, to their knowledge, no masks were taken off during the rest of the event.
Kee, the author of Lim’s book, was also called up by the police on Jan 16 for an alleged breach of SOP over the same photo.
It was previously reported that the police will investigate claims of SOP violations at the book launch which was held at the Sogo Convention Hall in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 11.
Dang Wangi district police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya reportedly said the matter will be investigated under Section 21A of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342).
The event on Jan 11 was to launch Lim’s biography, written by Kee, titled "Lim Kit Siang: Malaysian First". - Mkini
