Ismail Sabri speaks to Cambodia PM after 'arrogant' label against Saifuddin

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has spoken to his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen after the latter labelled Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah as "arrogant".

Wisma Putra said Ismail Sabri spoke with Hun Sen video conference at the Cambodian prime minister's request.

It said Ismail Sabri expressed Malaysia's support for Cambodia's chairpersonship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) but also underscored that Putrajaya's position on Myanmar remained unchanged.

Saifuddin had expressed reservations over Hun Sen's decision to visit Myanmar on Jan 7 while being chair of Asean, stating that he should have consulted other Asean members.Saifuddin said it could be perceived as Asean giving recognition to the army generals who were responsible for launching a coup against Aung San Suu Kyi's democratically elected government last year.

However, Hun Sen reportedly said Saifuddin "lacked politeness" and "should not be too arrogant with inappropriate remarks".

Wisma Putra, in a statement today, said Ismail Sabri emphasised the need to de-escalate the situation in Myanmar and a cessation of violence against civilians.

Political dialogue

He also called for an inclusive political dialogue involving all parties involved as well as the unconditional release of all political prisoners including Aung Sang Suu Kyi and U Win Minyt.

The Malaysian prime minister also gave his commitment to support Asean's humanitarian assistance efforts to the people of Myanmar.

"Concerning Asean's decision to invite a non-political representative from Myanmar to high-level Asean meetings, YAB Prime Minister underscored that Malaysia’s position on the matter remained unchanged unless there was real progress and full implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.

"YAB Prime Minister opined that proposed measures to address the situation in Myanmar should be deliberated at the Asean Foreign Ministers and Senior Officials’ levels," it said.

Five-Point Consensus

The five-point consensus are: end the violence, hold constructive talks among all parties concerned, provide Asean aid to Myanmar, appoint a special Asean envoy to conduct talks, and allow the envoy to visit the country.

The consensus was established while Brunei was the chair of Asean. The chairpersonship is rotated on an annual basis and Cambodia is the current chair.

Wisma Putra said Ismail Sabri, in his conversation with Hun Sen, also reaffirmed Malaysia's position on the need for the special envoy of the Asean chair to Myanmar to be granted access to all parties concerned towards finding a peaceful solution.
