Muhyiddin to sit out Johor polls

Muhyiddin Yassin says he will let Johor Bersatu leaders  decide on who they wish to put up as candidates.

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said he will not defend his Gambir seat in the upcoming Johor state polls, in order to make way for fresh faces.

However, the Bersatu president said he would leave it to the party to decide on the candidates, Berita Harian reported.

“I want to focus more on my parliamentary constituency and tend to party affairs at the national level,” he was quoted as saying by the Malay daily, referring to Pagoh.

Muhyiddin said he wanted to give other leaders in Johor a chance and it was up to them as to who they wanted by their side.

“We will decide later.”

Muhyiddin was speaking to reporters before chairing Bersatu’s Supreme Council meeting in Shah Alam earlier tonight.

The former prime minister won the Gambir seat by a majority of 3,088 votes after defeating Barisan Nasional’s (BN) M Asojan in the last general election (GE14).

The BN-led government held 28 seats while Pakatan Harapan had 27 seats prior to the dissolution of the Johor state legislative assembly on Saturday. The Kempas seat was left vacant following the death of its state assemblyman, former Johor menteri besar Osman Sapian, last month.

The Election Commission will meet on Feb 9 to fix the date for the snap polls. - FMT
