Pengkalan Chepa detainee died due to fluid in lungs - integrity chief

An autopsy on a detainee who died in police custody at the Pengkalan Chepa police station lock-up has determined the cause of death was due to fluids in the lungs, according to the Bukit Aman's Integrity and Standards Compliance Department.

Its director Azri Ahmad said the autopsy also found no injury or criminal element.

"The cause of death was fluid in the lungs.

“The death was classified as sudden death,” Azri (above) said in a statement today.

He added that the autopsy was conducted at the Raja Perempuan Zainab 2 Hospital in Kota Bharu yesterday.

However, he said that the Criminal Investigation and Custodial Death Unit under his department will continue its investigation before submitting a report to the deputy public prosecutor for a decision.

The 37-year-old Malay man who died had been arrested under Section 12(2) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, he said.

The detainee was under a remand order of four days, which was supposed to last from Jan 16 to 19.

In his statement yesterday, Azri said he died at 4.35pm. - Mkini
