We’ll talk with Umno if polls called in Johor, says PAS

PAS says it is ready for polls in Johor but discussions on cooperation with Umno will continue.

SHAH ALAM: PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has hinted that the Islamist party could work with Umno should state elections be called in Johor.

Tuan Ibrahim said the party would hold discussions with Umno – its partner in Muafakat Nasional (MN) – and other political parties to forge “good cooperation”.

“All parties are ready for the elections. Likewise, PAS too is ready because we usually contest in Johor, but discussions on cooperation will continue,” he said after an event here today.

He also maintained that MN was still “functioning as usual” and had not been dissolved, despite speculation that the political pact was nearing its end.

Tuan Ibrahim was joined by Umno’s Ismail Abd Muttalib, the deputy housing and local government minister, at the event.

PAS had decided to contest under Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the Melaka elections last November, clashing with Umno in seven seats and losing in all the constituencies it contested.

Barisan Nasional went on to win 21 of the 28 seats up for grabs.

Rumours of early elections in Johor began circulating in December shortly after the death of Kempas assemblyman Osman Sapian of Bersatu on Dec 21. Yesterday, menteri besar Hasni Mohamad was reportedly to have hinted that the state would go to the polls soon.

The state government, comprising Barisan Nasional and PN, has a one-seat majority in the state assembly, with 28 compared with Pakatan Harapan’s 27. - FMT
