KJ reminds CNY revellers to self-test before making visits

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah have both struck a note of caution alongside this year's Chinese New Year's greetings.

"As witnessed over the past few days, there has been an increase in Covid-19 cases in our country with the onset of the Omicron variant wave.

"However, with the high vaccination rate and compliance with the SOPs (standard operating procedures) that we practice, I am confident that we can all overcome it and celebrate this festive season more safely.

"Perform a self-test before visiting family and friends and always follow the SOP when doing pilgrimage activities," said Khairy in a statement on the Health Ministry's Facebook page.

The Health Ministry reported a total of 13 new Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Jan 31), bringing the cumulative death toll to 31,978. As of yesterday, there were 54,777 active Covid-19 cases, an increase of 21.2 percent from the 45,208 active infections a week ago and 33.5 percent from 41,034 infections 30 days ago.

Khairy also expressed hope that the Year of the Tiger, which is associated with the nature of courage, competitiveness, confidence and ambition, could bring the country out of the pandemic.

Noor Hisham also struck a cautious note reminding that Covid-19 has yet again prevented large public gatherings during this Chinese New Year.

"For those who are celebrating with family, the most important thing is to self-test and protect the vulnerable people in your family.

"Although the Covid-19 situation currently is stabilising and improving, please comply to all public health and social measures. The onus and responsibility are on everyone to protect our families and ourselves," he said. - Mkini
