Cops probe burning of party flags in Layang-Layang

Campaign flags flying in Johor. Police say they are investigating three cases of party flags being burned.

JOHOR BAHRU: Police are investigating incidents of political party flags being defaced or burned in the Layang-Layang state constituency in Kluang.

Johor police chief Kamarul Zaman Mamat said three political party flags that had been burned and thrown away were found during regular patrols in the constituency this morning.

“Police will conduct a thorough investigation to identify the culprit, including calling representatives of political parties to assist,” he told reporters, after visiting several Johor election campaign locations around Johor Bahru today.

He also advised all political parties contesting the Johor polls, as well as their supporters, to campaign maturely and avoid being too emotional as it could lead to fights.

The Layang-Layang state seat will be a four-way contest between Maszlee Malik (PKR), Alagathiran Krishnan (PN-Bersatu), Abd Mutalip Abd Rahim (BN-Umno) and Ahmad Shafiq Othaman (Pejuang).

Kamarul Zaman reminded all parties involved in the Johor polls to continue to abide by the Covid-19 restrictions.

“If the rules stipulate that the campaign should end at 10pm, just end it, there is no need to apply for an extension. Compliance with the SOPs is not something that is difficult to do. If people are still stubborn then we will take action,” he said.

Johor police also said today that three investigation papers involving election offences had been opened.

Voters go to the polls on March 12, with early voting on March 8. - FMT
