Credible info needed to continue MH370 search, says Wee

One of the search ships hired by the Malaysian government to cover an area of the southern Indian Ocean in 2018.

KUALA LUMPUR: Credible and actionable evidence is needed for the government to resume a search for the missing Malaysian aircraft flight MH370 which disappeared eight years ago, transport minister Wee Ka Siong said.

He reiterated that the Malaysian government’s aspirations to locate the aircraft has not been abandoned, Bernama reported.

Sympathising with the loss and pain of those affected by the missing aircraft with 239 people on board, he said Malaysia was also keen on careful consideration and study on all new credible information to identify the location of the aircraft.

In a recorded speech for MH370’s eighth anniversary on Tuesday (March 8), Wee said: “We just need credible and actionable evidence to act on before we can mount an expedition which we are certain could yield results.

“This must be credible information which can be used to identify the specific location of the aircraft. With this, consideration will be given to determining future search operations and re-establishment of the investigation team,”

The Malaysia Airlines (MAS) aircraft with 239 people on board left Kuala Lumpur for Beijing but vanished from the radar screen about two hours after its departure on March 8, 2014.

Massive search operations involving several countries were conducted in the southern Indian Ocean off the west coast of Australia but neither the plane nor its wreckage was found.

However, key pieces of debris identified as coming from the aircraft, registration number 9M-MRO, have been found on the African coast and islands in the Indian Ocean.

The discovery of the debris has strengthened belief that the aircraft went down in the southern Indian Ocean near Australia. - FMT
