Penangites will be able to watch the first Malaysian professional wrestling-themed movie ‘Gila Gusti’ through a free screening tonight, brought to them by Seri Delima assemblyperson Syerleena Abdul Rashid.
The movie directed by Silver Chung and produced by Lomo Pictures in collaboration with Quinn Media and APAC Wrestling will be played at 8pm in Queensbay Mall, Bayan Baru today.
Asked the motivation behind this activity, Syerleena, who has a passion for sports and music, said the time has come for Malaysians to support local talents.
“There are a few reasons to support this movie. The main being to help promote local talents, which has always been a priority for me.
“Local movie productions sometimes may not receive the same ‘treatment’ like international productions, which is most unfortunate because we have so many talented Malaysians out there dominating the local creative industry,” she told Malaysiakini.
The movie is about two friends who embark on a personal quest to help one of their favourite wrestlers to win, after falling from grace.
The movie showcases actual Malaysian wrestlers like Shaukat, Poppy, Gotham and Phoenix.
Positive message
The DAP assemblyperson said as the country shifts into the endemic phase, she personally wanted to present a positive message as the creative industry, tourism and sports have been badly affected by the lockdowns and restrictions for almost two years.
“The situation has kept us isolated. We have been closed off from one another for too long.
“This is a way to celebrate the human spirit, to celebrate our perseverance and fortitude, much like the wrestlers in this film.
“It’s to remind everyone to focus on the beautiful aspects of humanity even though times are still somewhat challenging for all,” she added.
Syerleena has always been a huge fan of what is commonly known as “ring sports” which includes wrestling, Muay Thai and mixed martial arts.
She said such sports are quite popular in Malaysia but are not exactly mainstream yet.
“Another awesome fact is that this movie also showcases Phoenix and Poppy, both wonderful Malaysian female wrestlers who are great role models for women and young girls.
“It’s quite fitting as well, as we just celebrated International Women’s Day,” added Syerleena, who is also passionate about women’s issues.
As to future endeavours, Syerleena said she will continue to find ways to support the local creative and sports industries.
Apart from being a politician, Syerleena is the guitarist and songwriter for local progressive-rock band, Priwayat, which she formed with Tanjung Bungah DAP representative Zairil Khir Johari.
“It’s time that Malaysians celebrate Malaysians,” she added. - Mkini
