PARLIAMENT | The government has projected an additional cost of RM3.4 billion to cover 11,296 new permanent appointments in the Health Ministry (MOH) from this year until 2025.
Deputy Health Minister II Aaron Ago Dagang said this follows the government's decision on Jan 19 to create 4,186 additional permanent positions this year, comprising 3,586 medical officers, 300 dental officers and 300 pharmacists.
"Implementation of this decision involves an initial financial implication of RM337.5 million a year for this year.
"The financial implication for purposes of paying emolument to these officers will continue to increase to RM1.2 billion from 2023 to 2025," said Aaron.
Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin previously announced that at least 1,500 permanent posts for medical officers, dental officers and pharmaceutical officers will be created at the ministry every year from 2023 to 2025.
"The estimated financial implication for purposes of paying emolument during the period amounted to RM774.5 million," Aaron said today.
For new permanent specialist positions, Aaron also cited an RM1.1 billion estimated costs for 800 doctors and 70 dentists each year from 2023 to 2025.
The MOH's announcement on new permanent positions earlier this year follows persistent demands including through the Hartal Doktor Kontrak movement that led to a contract medical officers strike.
The government had previously hired a mere 3,425 permanent medical, dental and pharmacy officers in the last six years from 2016 to 2021 since the contract system was introduced. - Mkini
