PETALING JAYA: The land border between Singapore and Malaysia will fully reopen on April 1, the prime ministers of both countries announced today.

In a joint statement, Lee Hsien Loong and Ismail Sabri Yaakob said fully vaccinated travellers will be allowed to travel to and fro without having to undergo any tests or quarantine.

“This will apply to all categories of travellers and modes of transport via the land border,” said the statement.

This comes after Singapore further relaxed its Covid-19 SOPs, including lifting most restrictions for fully vaccinated visitors and dropping requirements to wear masks outdoors from Tuesday.

In March, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said Malaysia’s international borders will reopen on April 1, allowing Malaysians to travel in and out of the country as they did before Covid-19 struck.

At the time, Singapore held back on committing to a firm date for reopening the Singapore side of the Causeway as officials were working out detailed arrangements with Malaysia.

Trade minister Gan Kim Yong, co-chair of the Covid-19 task force, had said the city-state’s transport and immigration authorities were working out operational details to ensure a smooth and safe reopening.

The full reopening of the borders with Singapore was among the hot topics during the recently concluded Johor elections, with parties saying this would be a major boost to the state’s economy. - FMT
