Muhyiddin draws crowd of 1,000 at Johor polls event

A section of the large crowd, estimated at more than 1,000, who attended a Perikatan Nasional election campaign event in Batu Pahat, Johor.

BATU PAHAT: The PAS headquarters here was flooded with more than 1,000 people tonight as Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin continues to campaign for the coalition in the Johor elections.

While the event titled “Santai bersama Muhyiddin Yassin” started without the Bersatu president amid heavy rain, he arrived around 15 minutes later to applause and chants of “Perikatan Nasional”.

Bersatu and PAS are partners in the coalition, which is contesting all 56 seats in the Johor state assembly. Its main rivals are Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan.

The event kicked off with a silat presentation, before several PN candidates took the microphone to address the crowd.

Even as the event was ongoing and the rain tapered off, several batches of people were seen arriving by bus and the crowd overflowed the large tent provided for the audience.

Lines of plastic chairs were placed outside while several groups stood at the front to catch a glimpse of Muhyiddin and snap a picture of him.

The crowd were mostly from the Malay community though there were a smattering of Chinese supporters, many of whom donned their PN attires.

Packets of food were provided for participants, quite a number of whom were teenagers below 18, though they were made to wait to feast on the pre-packed meals.

Several policemen could be seen monitoring the event as well as officers from the Election Commission.

Covid-19 SOPs were generally complied with except for the lack of physical distancing in the seating provided, while a handful were seen not wearing masks. - FMT
