Swimmer Cindy Ong to launch NFT collection to raise funds for Ukraine

Malaysian swimming champion and world masters champion Cindy Ong is set to launch a non-fungible token (NFT) project on March 20 that she hopes will help raise funds for the people of Ukraine.

Ong's NFTs will launch on Opensea later this month and will feature 999 rare and private collectable images of her.

A non-fungible token is a non-interchangeable unit of data stored on a blockchain, which is a form of digital ledger, that can be sold and traded.

In a statement today Ong said that she had been planning a personal NFT project for some time.

“When the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, it shook me to the core. In this day and age, things like this should never be happening. I was horrified and saddened beyond words to read about all the Ukrainians who are getting maimed, killed and suffering daily from this terrible war.

“And hearing about the nearly one million Ukrainians that have been forced to flee their own country is heartbreaking.

“That is why I decided to leverage on my upcoming NFT project to bring as much attention to this humanitarian tragedy that had befallen the Ukrainian people and to raise funds for them,” she said.

In 2021, Ong was ranked as the World No 1 in the women’s butterfly for the 35-39 age group, with a record of 26.71 seconds in the 50m freestyle.

In February, she alleged that the practice of age discrimination in sports, leading to increased barriers to entry for older athletes.

She also spoke out last May about how young athletes are often made vulnerable to sexual predators within the sports set-up.

“I believe NFTs are the best way for ordinary folks like ourselves to help Ukraine because sending cryptocurrency does not require middlemen or banks. Ukraine has set up an ERC-20 wallet to receive such funds and I have decided to help,” Ong added.

“My NFTs, entitled ‘Cindy Ong Swimmer -  My Private Collection’ will be a very rare and private collection of never-before released images.

“They were photographed over the years for personal keeps. Five special NFTs will be auctioned, each of which comes with a framed swimsuit.

“I will now release most of these rare collectibles into the public domain as NFTs in support of Ukraine and also in support of all the causes I hold near and dear to my heart, namely #OwnYourBody, #WomenEmpowerment, #Strong and #ControlYourDestiny,” said Ong. - Mkini
