Govt to spend RM155mil on free public transport initiative

Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that in total, the government will bear RM155 million in subsidies throughout the one-month period.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will spend a total of RM155 million to subsidise the cost of free public transportation services in the Klang Valley for a month, said Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

In a press conference, he said RM140 million would be spent on free public transportation services under RapidKL.

A further RM15 million would be spent on free KTM services in the Klang Valley for a month.

“In total, the government will bear RM155 million in subsidies throughout this one-month period,” he said.

Ismail hoped that this initiative would help ease congestion faced by road users in the Klang Valley, adding that he had been hearing of complaints about traffic jams daily.

“I hope that people will make use of this service not just during this month but anytime.”

In conjunction with the official opening of Phase 1 of the MRT Putrajaya Line today, Ismail earlier announced that commuters taking the MRT, LRT, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), monorail or RapidKL bus services would not have to pay any fares.

He later announced that the fare exemption would include KTM services within the Klang Valley.

However, the move was met by criticism from netizens, who said it was more important for the government to address public transport issues such as overcrowding and service breakdowns. - FMT
