PETALING JAYA: Police fired a gunshot as they wrestled down a drug addict who had run amok at a house in Kampung Sungai Kandis, Shah Alam, and hacked two policemen with a parang yesterday.

Ridzuan Marsudi, 31, and Zulhusni Hassani, 30, were injured in their wrists and treated at Shah Alam Hospital. Ridzuan, however, was later taken to Selayang Hospital for surgery. He is now in stable condition.

Shah Alam police chief Iqbal Ibrahim was quoted by Harian Metro as saying that the two policemen had been injured at about 3.45pm when they and five others were following up on a case where a 47-year-old man had driven his Nissan Navara into his brother’s Honda Accord.

Iqbal said the man had also thrown a flower pot at the brother’s car before chasing him with a parang.

“When police arrived at the scene, the suspect refused to cooperate and locked the front door. However, Zulhusni and his team managed to enter the house,” he was quoted as saying.

According to Iqbal, the man started waving the parang furiously in Ridzuan’s direction, prompting the policeman to fire a shot in self-defence. The bullet did not hit anyone.

He said the man then attacked the policemen, leading to a scuffle. However, the officers managed to arrest him.

Iqbal said the man stayed alone in the house while his brother lived next door. He said the man tested positive for drugs. He also had a record for assaulting a civil servant, Iqbal added.

He has been remanded until Thursday. The case is being probed under Sections 307 and 326 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon. - FMT
