You’re leader for all Malaysians, not just Umno – Guan Eng reminds PM

As the top five Umno leaders are scheduled to meet tonight to discuss the 15th general election (GE15) date, a DAP leader reminded Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob that he serves 32 million Malaysians, and not only Umno.

As such, any decision taken must prioritise the people's interests, safety and well-being over the “selfish” political interests of Umno, said DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng.

"Such a reminder bears greater urgency following a statement by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) yesterday that the country will go through a monsoon transition phase starting Oct 3 until the end of November.

"MetMalaysia stated that during this monsoon transition phase, the country will encounter thunderstorms that could potentially trigger flash floods," the Bagan MP said in a statement today.

Lim (above) noted that the government has a duty to allow voters to cast their ballots in an orderly, safe, secure and calm environment, instead of having to wade through flood waters.

Ignore Zahid

"Look at the flood devastation brought by Hurricane Ian in Florida and Cuba, Hurricane Fiona in Puerto Rico, Typhoon Nanmadol in Japan, Typhoon Noru in Philippines and Vietnam.

"(It's) better to defy the anger of (Umno president) Ahmad Zahid (Hamidi) than incur the wrath of Mother Nature," said Lim, adding the rakyat’s lives cannot be put at risk just to satisfy the whims and fancies of politicians.

"This is a good opportunity for Ismail Sabri to deliver as prime minister by holding the general election next year and leave a lasting impression that he is willing to stand up to his political bosses in Umno because he ultimately serves his real bosses - the people of Malaysia."

All eyes are on the Umno supreme council meeting tonight, where a decision is expected to be made on the date for GE15.

Zahid had been pushing for an early election despite warnings of possible flash floods during the monsoon season.

Critics have called it a desperate move by the Bagan Datuk MP to escape a litany of charges he is facing in court. - Mkini
