Seberang Jaya assemblyperson Dr Afif Bahardin’s preference for the next general election was either to be fielded in Shah Alam or Permatang Pauh as a parliamentary candidate.
Speaking to Utusan Malaysia, Afif (above), 37, said he was born and bred in Shah Alam, Selangor and has been politically active there despite having represented the Seberang Jaya constituency in Penang for two terms.
“I have longed for a return to Shah Alam. It would be unfair to me if I served in Penang but not in my home town.
“That is why when I joined Bersatu, I signed up as a member of the party’s Shah Alam division. where I am now the deputy chief,” he said.
In 2013, Afif became the first candidate to wrest the Seberang Jaya state seat from BN. It is part of the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency - the stronghold of PKR president Anwar Ibrahim’s family.
Afif said the Bersatu leadership has been informed of his wish to be allowed to defend the Seberang Jaya seat and be fielded for either Shah Alam or Permatang Pauh.
He said the Shah Alam incumbent, Khalid Abdul Samad, does not have new ideas and should make way for someone new.
“He’s been there for a few terms and I’ve voted for him before but he’s not bringing new ideas to Shah Alam.
“If I am entrusted by my party to be there, there are a few issues (I will pursue) such as marginalised and underperforming schools,” he said.
As for Permatang Pauh, Afif accused the incumbent Nurul Izzah Anwar of not being committed to her constituents.
“When I was in PKR, it was difficult to secure her commitment for events with the constituents,” he said. - Mkini
