PETALING JAYA: With Petronas set to pay the government RM50 billion in dividend payouts this year, PKR Youth has questioned if Umno would now criticise this move.
PKR Youth chief Adam Adli said his Umno counterpart, Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, had accused the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration of “looting” Petronas when the national petroleum company made a similar RM54 billion payout to the government in 2019.
“The amount received this year is not far off from the RM54 billion received by PH in 2019,” Adam said in a statement.
“The difference is that the dividend payouts were criticised by Umno when PH was in government, but that same criticism has not been forthcoming against its own administration.
“We should demand a response on this issue from leaders who were outspoken on the matter, including the Umno Youth chief, who has yet to make a sound as the prime minister and finance minister are from his party.”
Adam also questioned if Asyraf and other Umno leaders were willing to retract the criticisms they had made against PH previously.
On Tuesday, Petronas announced an additional RM25 billion dividend payment to the government, making it a total dividend payout of RM50 billion for the year.
Petronas president and group CEO Tengku Taufik Tengku Aziz said the new dividend was on top of the RM25 billion approved in February.
Adam, who is also the deputy PH Youth chief, urged the government to be transparent about the RM50 billion from Petronas to ensure the funds were spent properly.
He maintained that the funds should not be used for the interests of certain individuals, or even for the upcoming general election by the government. - FMT
